Notes

Co-owned with Samuel Walker the first saw mill in Osceola Mills, Clearfield CO< PA. They built it in 1828 or 1829, at a site described in a 1934 newspaper account as "near where the large tannery in Osceola Mills once stood, being now occupied by Stine's foundry." From, "From the Begining" by Gerald and Jasper Fritz. Pub approx 1991. "Accessibility was the biggest factor that kept the Moshannon Valley from undergoing developement at a faster pace. Fifty years after Abraham Goss became the first settler near Stumptown, the location which would later become known as Osceola Mills Borough was largely undeveloped. The first person after Thomas Winters to settle within the present-day limits of the Borough was Daniel Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman built a water-powered saw mill near the junction of Pruner and Coal streets. The mill was located where the tannery later stood. Still later there was a skating rink on the site which was converted to apartments about 40 years ago. Hoffman's mill may have been the first saw mill in this area of the state. It was in operation as early as 1828 or 1829. A man by the name of Samuel Walker was also involved in the operation of the mill. In 1832 or 1833, Abraham Goss put up another... The 1830 census lists Daniel Hoffman as at least 60 years old with a wife about the same age and at least one daughter in her twenties. The 1840 census also lists Daniel Hoffman, who was by then in his seventies. His wife had died and the daughter had at least one child. There may have been other children who were gone from home before Mr. Hoffman came to the area. Perhaps this same daughter is the one who married David Kephart, son of pioneer Henry Kephart... Daniel Hoffman ran the mill until 1844 when he sold the propert to Thomas Mays."
